Wine Tasting & Fund Raising
A wine tasting event is a great idea for a fund raiser. There are wine shops and caterers that can organize something like this, or you can do it yourself. Your main job is to sell tickets to people to attend the tasting. After your expenses, the remaining funds you have collected will go to support your organization and its activities.
Now, in many places, a wine tasting would only be appropriate as a fund raiser for an adult organization or charity. In some locales, people would object to using anything connected with alcohol to raise money for a youth group. But in other places this does not seem to be an issue.
We know of someone whose high school soccer team is having a wine tasting for a fund raiser. Of course, the kids will not be drinking at the event, but their parents and friends presumably will be happy to do so, all in the cause of supporting the team!
One of the soccer players, though, was concerned about how you sell tickets to such an event. Really, though, the approach to selling wine tasting tickets is not different from selling tickets to any fundraiser. You just call up friends, friends of friends, and so on, and ask. If you’re a teenager you can ask other teenagers to get their parents to buy a ticket. You can also print up a flyer or inexpensive poster and ask local businesses to place it in their windows.
In the case of the soccer team, the wine tasting will also include appetizers and desserts. They are asking $20 per ticket and figure to make $15 per ticket after expenses. If this math is correct, then they have an excellent arrangement with someone. We didn’t get all of the details, but we suspect that the parents are providing the food and that someone has donated space in which to hold the event. Also, perhaps they worked out a discount purchase deal with a local wine shop or grocery store.
Wine tasting fund raisers are a great idea. In these days of economic uncertainty and tight budgets, it’s something that more organizations might want to consider.
